A Brief Background on CoQ10
Coenzyme Q10 caught the attention of scientists and medical researchers as far
back as 1957. Originally discovered by Frederick Crane, Ph.D., at the
University of Wisconsin, future research by his colleagues determined that
CoQ10 was present in every cell in the body (in the cell organelle membranes
and mitochondria) — and is highly critical for cellular energy, longevity, and
the health of such organs as the heart, kidneys, and liver. In fact, it’s
responsible for 95% of all the energy produced in the mitochondria and used by
the body.
However, the body’s production of CoQ10 diminishes with age, drug therapy, and
diseases. Young and healthy individuals produce about 3-5 mg of CoQ10 per day.
But after age 30, the production levels decline, thus the need for
supplementation. Additionally, certain disease states are improved by CoQ10
supplementation.
Forms of CoQ10 in the Body
CoQ10 is found as two major forms in the body, oxidized (ubiquinone) and
reduced (ubiquinol), with the reduced form being predominant (over 90%). CoQ10
acts as an antioxidant in its reduced form, but its benefits go far beyond
cleaning up free radicals in the body. Studies show that the oxidized form is
an essential element in energy production… electron transfer… ATP production…
and control of oxidative reactions. It also plays a key role in the treatment
of cardiovascular illnesses, including congestive heart failure and angina.
Recent studies show that it’s also very effective in the treatment of
Parkinson’s disease and cancer.
Manufacturing CoQ10
Many technical challenges have had to be overcome in manufacturing CoQ10 in a
form that can be readily absorbed and assimilated by the human body.
First of all, the CoQ10 molecule is rather large. And until recently, it was
only manufactured in the oxidized, crystalline (powder) form. Unfortunately,
crystalline CoQ10 is nearly impossible for the body to absorb simply because
the crystalline form has an extremely high melting point — 118 degrees
Fahrenheit — 20 degrees above body temperature! That’s the reason why the
powder CoQ10 formulas exhibited such low absorption rates at around 1%.
Therefore, scientists have worked diligently for the past two decades to
develop CoQ10 in a form that could be more easily absorbed and put to use in
the body. The challenge was to improve on the low absorption rate of the
powder (usually tablet or capsule) form.
The first innovation came with “softgel” formulas, which are oil soluble. This
improved absorption of the CoQ10 to around 2.5%. Then came two patented
softgel formulas with improved absorption of around 3-4%.
Later attempts included a so-called “reduced” CoQ10, which employed better
marketing than science (even the “reduced” CoQ10 softgels only had absorption
of less than 3%) — as well as “nano” CoQ10, a much smaller carrier system of
CoQ10 whose absorption is still questionable.
But today, we at Supplement Spot are proud to announce the development of a
true breakthrough in CoQ10 absorption and bioavailability.
Introducing Healthy CoQ10 Max-Sorb™— The “Clear” Winner
The problem with all the other “softgel” attempts at delivering CoQ10 to the
absorption cells is that, after the manufacturing process, the CoQ10
re-crystallizes inside the softgel — and often creates larger crystals than
the finely-milled starting material.
To get around that, some manufacturers resorted to using solvents (such as
D-Limonene and Vitamin E) in their formulas to solubilize the CoQ10 crystals.
But even these solvents present a problem inasmuch as they did not facilitate
the absorption and may even interfere with the CoQ10 absorption process.
Here at Healthy Aging Nutraceuticals, however, we discovered a proprietary
process to keep the CoQ10 in its purest crystal-free form without resorting to
solvents. Utilizing a proprietary, lipid tri-blend formulation enables our
product to be 100% crystal-free (amorphous) — and therefore increases the
absorption and bioavailability dramatically.
In fact, double-blind placebo-controlled human clinical studies have shown the
following evidence that our new CoQ10 formula — Healthy CoQ10 Max-Sorb™— is by
far the clear winner in today’s quest to achieve a superior CoQ10 product.
How Does Healthy CoQ10 Max-Sorb Work?
Healthy CoQ10 Max-Sorb™’s high absorption and bioavailability came as no
accident. There are a number of formulation techniques that were utilized:
-
Patent-Pending, Proprietary Lipid Tri-Blend
-- A number of different lipids were tested to solubilize and enhance
the absorption of CoQ10. After testing dozens of oils, our researchers
discovered that a tri-blend of Conjugated Linoleic Acid, Flaxseed Oil, and
Monoglycerides yielded the best absorption results. However, you can’t simply
mix these three oils with CoQ10 and pump it into a softgel. A proprietary
treatment of this lipid tri-blend is necessary to keep the CoQ10 solubilized
and enhance its absorption into the body. This is the key in making Healthy
CoQ10 Max-Sorb a unique, successful formulation.
-
No Solvents. All Natural.
--As mentioned earlier, other manufacturers used solvents, such as
D-Limonene, to keep the CoQ10 solubilized in the formula. The only problem
with this is that these solvents also inhibited the absorption of CoQ10 by the
body.
-
Larger Volume
--Taking a page out of pharmacology, the absorption of an active
ingredient can be improved by increasing the surface area of the active dose.
For example, a 50 mg Healthy CoQ10 Max-Sorb™ softgel comes in a size 14 oblong
softgel. Other 50 mg CoQ10 softgels are usually found in a smaller 7.5 oval
size.
The larger softgel volume allows the CoQ10 in Healthy CoQ10 Max-Sorb™ to
be solubilized in a larger lipid solution, so when it hits the intestine
(where CoQ10 is absorbed), a larger surface area is covered — allowing for
increased absorption.
In addition, the highly absorbable monoglycerides, part of the lipid
tri-blend, enhances the absorption of CoQ10 into the body.
The Study
To prove the theoretical claims, Healthy CoQ10 Max-Sorb™ underwent an IRB
Registered, 20 person double-blind human clinical trial utilizing a 36-hour
peak absorption study to determine the total amount of CoQ10 absorbed, along
with a 28-day steady state study to determine the amount of CoQ10 in the blood
plasma which is available for use by the body cells.
In this study, Healthy CoQ10 Max-Sorb™ was compared to a standard dry CoQ10
powder. Normal healthy subjects taking no CoQ10 supplementation CoQ10
medications that interfere with CoQ10 synthesis (such as statins,
anti-depressants, hypoglycemics, antibiotics, chemotherapy, etc.) were chosen
for this experiment. Blood samples were taken for plasma CoQ10 levels. Each
subject was given his or her randomly assigned product and took same in the
presence of the medical director. Additional blood samples were taken at 2, 4,
6, 8, 10, 12, 24, and 36 hours. During this time period, the subjects took no
further product.
The results of the 36-hour absorption study showed that Healthy CoQ10
Max-Sorb™ had a total absorption of 7.89% (% of dose absorbed at Cmax)
compared to 0.87% for standard dry CoQ10 powder, which makes Healthy CoQ10
Max-Sorb™ over 800% more absorbed than CoQ10 powder. The estimated total
absorption for Healthy CoQ10 Max-Sorb™ was 11.56% compared to only 3.2% for
the standard dry powder.
After the 36-hour peak absorption study, each subject was given a one month
supply of their assigned product and instructed to take a single dose each
morning with a breakfast containing some fat. They were instructed to follow
their normal diet and daily activities, and returned to the testing facility
on days 7, 14, 21, and 28 in a rested and fasted condition to test their basal
CoQ10 levels after taking daily doses.
The results of the 28-day steady state study showed that at the end of 28
days, there were 8.99 mg of Healthy CoQ10 Max-Sorb™ available for use by the
cells, compared to 1.62 mg of dry powder CoQ10. This clearly makes Healthy
CoQ10 Max-Sorb over 440% more bioavailable than powder CoQ10 products.
Similarly, the area under the bioavailability curve (AUC) showed that the 28
day AUC for Healthy CoQ10 Max-Sorb™ was 53.5 ug/ml.day compared to only 9.9
ug/ml.day for the standard dry powder.
Clearly, Healthy CoQ10 Max-Sorb™ produces over FOUR TIMES greater
bioavailability than the old powder form—as well as EIGHT TIMES greater
absorption.
When it comes to CoQ10, absorption is the key. Bioavailability is a measure of
accumulated CoQ10 in blood that is available to body cells, and absorption
must occur before CoQ10 can be made available to the body.
The main physical feature of the Healthy CoQ10 Max-Sorb™ formula is that the
CoQ10 is solubilized and stabilized in a lipid tri-blend. This means the CoQ10
is stable and will not re-crystallize — and the softgel remains perfectly
clear throughout the shelf-life of the product. The ultimate result is
improved absorption and bioavailability, and improved overall efficacy of the
CoQ10 supplement.
Plus, Healthy CoQ10 Max-Sorb™ has been shown to be insensitive to light. One
of the “marketing myths” being promoted is that CoQ10 is light sensitive, and
therefore must be put into a colored, opaque shell. The truth is CoQ10 is not
light sensitive. To prove this, we had Healthy CoQ10 Max-Sorb™ tested for
photo-sensitivity (there are only a couple of FDA drug labs approved to do
this test), and it passed with flying colors with only 1% degradation, which
is better than most drugs.
The Healthy CoQ10 Max-Sorb™ difference is clear. And when consumers see
this—and then discover that with Healthy CoQ10 Max-Sorb™ they’re getting over
four times greater bioavailability… and eight times greater absorption…
they’ll quickly abandon their former CoQ10 brands in favor of anyone offering
Healthy CoQ10 Max-Sorb™.
