Osteoporosis: The Silent Killer
A systemic skeletal disease characterized by low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue, osteoporosis, or low bone mineral density currently affects more than 28 million Americans and an even greater number of Europeans. Researchers further noted that while ipriflavone shares structural similarities with naturally occurring estrogens, it does not exert estrogenic effects in the hypothalamus and pituitary gland. Ipriflavone simply improves the properties of bone tissue and prevents the loss of bone mass in patients treated with estrogens.

In 1992, researchers at the International Journal of Bone, Mineral and Calcium Regulation Research presented evidence that a daily dose of 600 mg of ipriflavone increased bone density by as much as 9% in three to nine months. This evidence was further supported in 1994 by two studies that demonstrated a significant reduction in vertebral fractures in human patients after a two-year treatment with ipriflavone. Since then, more than 400 patients treated with ipriflavone in double-blind, placebo controlled studies have noted significant increments of .5 to 7.1 percent in total body, forearm and vertebral bone mineral density. Many of these patients have risen from their beds and walkers and assumed an active life.
How Ipriflavone Works
Ipriflavone is rapidly absorbed through the small intestine, particularly when taken with food, and then is metabolized by cells, primarily in the liver. The ingredient is then excreted in the urine in less than 10 hours. When compared with Calcitonin, one of the most popularly prescribed prescription drugs, ipriflavone proved a greater ability to inhibit the formation osteoclasts (old bone cells) and bone resorption, while simultaneously stimulating the formation of osteoblasts, or new bone cells.
